STUDY ABROAD

Alicante, Spain

My Experience
In the spring semester of 2025, I studied abroad in Alicante, Spain—an experience that began with uncertainty and quickly became one of the most transformative chapters of my life. I arrived knowing no one in my program, stepping off the plane with a mix of excitement and nerves. What I didn’t realize then was how much this leap into the unknown would challenge me, shape me, and ultimately expand my view of both the world and myself.

From the very beginning, I was pushed outside of my comfort zone. Without familiar faces to rely on, I had no choice but to introduce myself, start conversations, and build connections from scratch. What initially felt intimidating soon became empowering. Over time, the strangers I met in my program turned into some of my closest friends. Through shared classes, weekend trips, late-night conversations, and navigating life in a new country together, we built bonds that I know will last far beyond our time abroad.

Living in Spain fully immersed me in the language in a way that no classroom in the United States ever could. Everyday tasks—ordering coffee, asking for directions, riding the tram, or chatting with locals—became opportunities to practice and grow. At first, the speed of conversations and the regional accent felt overwhelming. But little by little, my confidence improved. I found myself thinking in Spanish more naturally, responding without overthinking, and truly engaging in conversations rather than just translating in my head. This constant immersion strengthened not only my language skills but also my cultural awareness and adaptability.

A major highlight of my semester was my internship at El Centro Superior de Idiomas at the University of Alicante. There, I gained hands-on professional experience in translation services and office operations within an international environment. I helped manage translation projects, communicated with clients in both Spanish and English, coordinated with translators, and contributed to improving the office’s online database system. Working in a bilingual, multicultural workplace pushed me to be more detail-oriented, professional, and flexible. It showed me that I can successfully operate in an international business setting—something that strongly aligns with my long-term career goals.

Outside the classroom and office, I took full advantage of being in Europe by traveling extensively. Over the course of the semester, I visited more than ten countries, including Finland, Morocco, France, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Portugal. Each destination taught me something different. Whether it was experiencing the quiet beauty of Finland, navigating the vibrant markets of Morocco, walking through historic streets in Italy, or exploring canals in the Netherlands, every trip pushed me to become more independent, resourceful, and open-minded. Traveling so frequently required careful planning, adaptability when things went wrong, and the confidence to navigate unfamiliar environments—all skills that will serve me well in my future career.

Of course, the experience was not without its challenges. There were moments of homesickness, times when travel plans didn’t go as expected, and days when cultural differences felt frustrating rather than exciting. Public transportation tested my patience more than once, and making new friends initially felt uncomfortable. But looking back, those were the moments that produced the most growth. Each obstacle forced me to become more resilient, more flexible, and more confident in my ability to handle the unexpected.

Perhaps one of the most meaningful transformations was personal. Spain’s lifestyle introduced me to a different pace of life—one that values connection, balance, and presence. Long sobremesas after meals and the rhythm of the siesta culture challenged my previously fast-paced mindset. Over time, I began to appreciate slowing down, being more present in conversations, and prioritizing experiences over constant productivity. This shift in perspective reshaped how I think about success and work-life balance.

By the time I returned home, I was no longer the same person who had arrived months earlier. I came back more independent, more culturally aware, and more confident in my ability to adapt anywhere in the world. Professionally, I strengthened my bilingual communication skills and gained real international work experience. Personally, I built lifelong friendships, pushed past my comfort zone, and proved to myself that I can thrive in unfamiliar environments.

My semester abroad did more than give me memories—it gave me direction. It confirmed my desire to pursue an international career where I can use my Spanish, work across cultures, and continue exploring the world. Most importantly, it taught me that the greatest growth happens when you take risks and embrace uncertainty.

Alicante will always hold a special place in my life. The friendships I formed, the countries I explored, the professional skills I developed, and the confidence I gained are experiences I will carry with me into my future career and beyond. Studying abroad didn’t just change where I’ve been—it changed how I see what’s possible for my future.
